Frequently asked questions about endodontics

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. The treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Mild and temporary discomfort may occur after the appointment and can usually be easily controlled with standard pain relief medication.

How long does root canal treatment take?

It depends on the anatomy of the tooth and the complexity of the case. In general, treatment is completed in one or two sessions.

Is it better to extract the tooth?

Whenever possible, preserving the natural tooth is the best functional and biological option. No dental implant can exactly reproduce the proprioception or behaviour of your own natural tooth.

What happens if I do not have root canal treatment when it is needed?

The infection may progress and cause severe pain, abscesses, damage to the supporting bone and ultimately the permanent loss of the tooth.

Can root canal treatment fail?

The success rate of microscopic endodontic treatment is very high. In cases involving complex anatomy or persistent infection, retreatment may be necessary and can also be performed under a microscope.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?
